The 16th Hong Kong Chemistry Olympiad for Secondary Schools

Date: 23/04/2011
Awarding Organization:
Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education,
The Hong Kong Chemical Society,
The Royal Society of Chemistry,
Hong Kong Education City Limited

The main theme of the contest for 2010-2011 was "Chemistry of Polymer". A team of 6C students investigated the absorption properties of a naturally occuring polymer, sodium alginate, extracted from seaweed towards 18 metal ions. They found that the polarizing power and cationic size of metal ions governed the absorption efficiency. Another team of 6D and S4 students investigated the synthesis, conducting properties and the application of an artificial polymer, polyaniline. They developed a system to detect various acidic, alkaline and toxic gases based on the research of polyaniline.
