The Opening Speech by The Honourable LEUNG Chun-ying, GBS, JP :
In a few moments we shall sing the School Song. Every word of the school song touches the hearts of generations of Kings students. These two lines touch me most. "Old boys, new boys, winning glory, we ourselves must write the story."
History is a collection of the stories of men and women. When we write our story, we write the history. "We ourselves must write the story" because we do not want to be just part of the story by happenstance. We want to shape the outcome of the story and history by writing it. "We ourselves must write the story" also because we want to be on the glory side of the story.
Today, we celebrate the 85th anniversary of the School. For 85 years, our School has written the history of quality education in HK. We have also written the history of quality education for youngsters regardless of their family background. Throughout this history, boys and girls of modest means have also brought glory to the School and to Hong Kong.
One of the glories that has been won for the school and for Hong Kong is the outstanding accomplishments of King's Harmonica Band. Today we also celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Band. I was given this book 6 years ago. The title of the book is 70 years of HK harmonica. The book was published by the Hong Kong Harmonica Association, the founding chairman of which is Dr Ho Pak Cheong, a King's old boy. In the space of harmonica music, one can clearly see how King's old boys and new boys have written the story and won immense glory for the School and for Hong Kong.
On this occasion of double happiness, I say happy birthday King's College, happy birthday the Harmonica Band. I wish you both even greater success and glory.
